Featured Nonprofit
Save the Manatee Club was established in 1981 by renowned singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet and former US Senator and Florida Governor, Bob Graham. An award-winning national nonprofit 501(c)(3), their mission focuses on protecting manatees and their aquatic habitat for future generations. $10 from each manatee item sold by The Moving Mirror will be donated to the Emergency Rescue Fund to help rescue and rehabilitate manatees who are sick, injured, or orphaned.
What is a Manatee?
Why are Manatees Dying?
Water Pollution is one contributor to manatees dying at an alarming rate in Florida. Pesticide and wastewater runoff are flowing into our waterways creating toxic algal blooms that live on the water's surface. These toxic algal blooms turn the water green and kill the manatee's primary food source, seagrass. As a result, manatees are starving to death. With no known natural predators, we are the biggest threat to their survival. It's up to us to save the manatee.

How You Can Help
Take a Break from Fertilizer. Too many yard chemicals, including fertilizer and herbicides, are entering our waterways, causing algal blooms that kill seagrasses and harm manatees. Consider natural landscapes that require little to no fertilizers. If you live near a water body, leave at least a 10-foot-buffer along the shoreline where no fertilizing occurs.
Report distressed, sick, injured or dead manatees. Call 1-888-404-FWCC (3922). Program this number into your phone!
Contact Policy Makers. Whether you live in Florida or outside the state, you can take action by writing to key policymakers urging greater protection for manatees. Contact Decision Makers here.
